Burns' Academic Scholarship is a The Simpsons Comic Strips story that was first published in 2001.
Synopsis[edit]
- Lisa, Database, and Martin go to the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant to receive The Burns Corp. $50 Academic Scholarships. But Mr. Burns doesn't want to give them the money.
Plot[edit]
Smithers tells Mr. Burns that Lisa, Database, and Martin have arrived at the Power Plant to receive The Burns Corp. $50 Academic Scholarships. Mr. Burns says that the scholarship is no way to promote his dream of a world populated by dim-witted worker drones. He then says that the eggheads make his blood run cold and adds that it's always the bookworms, like Abraham Lincoln and Vladimir Lenin, that are troublemakers with their talk of rights and equality. Mr. Burns then sees Homer on the CCTV screens and says that he's the ideal worker: dumb as a smoked ham and pacified by a steady diet of beer and TV. Smithers tells Burns that tyrants like him no longer need to fear the scheming of the educated class because the smartest people now pursue difficult but pointless endeavors like space shuttle missions, million-dollar game shows, and the Internet. Burns asks Smithers what the Internet is, and Smithers shows him on a laptop. Realizing that the Internet is a fancy way to look at pin-up girls, shop by mail, and steal musical recordings, Burns opts to give the children a $1,000 laptop each instead of the $50 scholarship. Burns says that with the cash, they could have bought something dangerous, like a book.
