Season 17 is the seventeenth broadcast season of The Simpsons. It originally ran on Fox from September 11, 2005, with "The Bonfire of the Manatees", to May 21, 2006, with "Marge and Homer Turn a Couple Play". The season was mostly made up of production season HABF episodes, with seven rollover episodes from production season GABF also airing. Al Jean served as the showrunner for the season.

After falling into debt with the Springfield Mafia, Fat Tony takes payment in the form of using his house as a set for a porn film. When Marge finds out, she leaves Homer and meets up with scientist Caleb Thorn. Homer and the kids then track Marge down so he can win her back.

After a protest against construction happening on Evergreen Terrace, the construction gets swapped with the Springfield Cemetery, which Lisa can now see from her bedroom window. Nightmares cause Lisa sleepless nights, and she starts to sleep with her parents. Lisa is then admitted to therapy to help her get over her fears.

When Kirk and Luann get back together again, Milhouse starts to feel neglected by his parents. So, Bart and Milhouse leave one of Marge's bras on Kirk and Luann's bed in an attempt to break them up again, which leads to Homer questioning Marge's loyalty to him.

In "B.I.: Bartificial Intelligence", after Bart falls into a coma, the family gets a new robot son, David. But when Bart wakes up, he's not happy about being replaced. In "Survival of the Fattest", Mr. Burns invites many of the townspeople to go hunting, but unbeknownst to them, they're the prey being hunted. In "I've Grown a Costume on Your Face", a witch turns everyone in Springfield into their costumed characters, and Maggie, being dressed as a witch, is the only one who can break the spell.

When Marge buys a tandem bicycle, she finds that nobody wants to ride with her, until Bart notices that she's feeling lonely and offers to join her. However, when Bart actually enjoys spending time with his mom, he becomes labeled a "momma's boy" and breaks Marge's heart when he stops spending time with her.

When The Simpsons go to Italy to pick up a new Italian sports car for Mr. Burns, they end up in a village called Salsiccia where the residents aren't aware of the criminal past of their new mayor, Sideshow Bob, who is now married and has a son. When the Simpsons reveal who Bob is to his family, he declares a "vendetta" against them.

When Homer takes charge of the Christmas service at the First Church of Springfield, he tells the story of the birth of Jesus Christ. Back at home, Grampa tells the story of how he lost his brother, Cyrus, and met Santa Claus after Mr. Burns shot his sleigh down. Finally, after a performance of "The Nutcracker" at Springfield Elementary, the people of Springfield sing along to the music.

After a frozen mailman from the 60s is discovered, all the letters he was carrying are delivered to their destinations, including one for Mona Simpson from a man telling her about their son, which suggests Grampa might not be Homer's father. Homer seeks out Mason Fairbanks, who may be his biological father.

When Bart enacts revenge against new gym teacher Coach Krupt, Willie's shack gets destroyed in the crossfire. Meanwhile, Homer rips his favorite blue pants and starts an ambitious advertising campaign to bring the brand back.

After Grampa blows Springfield's chance to get an NFL franchise, he becomes hated by the town and goes to an assisted suicide center. But when the center is shut down before he is euthanized, Grampa gets a new lease on life and becomes a toreador. While he becomes loved by the townspeople, Lisa becomes disappointed in him.
