- The episode title is a reference to the 1972 film Last Tango in Paris.
- In the couch gag, Homer makes a similar noise to George from George of the Jungle when swinging on the vine.
- The Cyborganizer is a parody of RoboCop.
- The Eye Caramba opticians is a reference to Bart's catchphrase, "Ay caramba!"
- When the optometrist tells Homer that the style of glasses he was trying on was popular with celebrities like Val Kilmer, Homer refers to Kilmer as his "favorite Door," referencing The Doors, a biographical film about the American rock band the Doors, in which Kilmer played Jim Morrison.
- The store Tommy Hillclimber is a reference to clothing company Tommy Hilfiger.
- One of the items that Marge bought for Bart's camping trip is "Blair Witch repellent", a reference to the horror film The Blair Witch Project.
- The plot of Tango de La Muerte is a reference to a common trope in films, in particular Strictly Ballroom.
- Kearney, imitating Marge, asks a blind Homer to buy him some Jack Daniel's and a carton of smokes.
- Lil' Vicky Valentine is based on former child actress Shirley Temple. Like Temple, Valentine made a series of childhood movies and has since remained active in her profession.
- Milhouse suggests that he and Bart can stay at Four Seasons.
- The Stan's Keyboards salesman sings a parody of the children's song "If You're Happy and You Know It".
- Chief Wiggum's remark about being "crazy about the safety of the public" when he demands that the mall be shut down on Presidents' Day weekend is a reference to the film Jaws.
- The police use Acme Corporation giant rat traps to try and catch what they think is a giant rat in the mall. Acme is the company that Wile E. Coyote uses in the Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner cartoons.
- The children playing aliens in the dance recital giggle in a similar way to the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz.
- Lil' Vicki says that she once destroyed Buddy Ebsen's credit rating.
- When Homer and Marge tell Lisa that she could write a depressing Broadway play, Homer says that she could fill it with lots of swears, as that's what David Mamet does.

- When Marge and Lisa see the film poster, Patty's dress is blue.
- In the cinema, Gloria Prince's hair is brown.
- When Homer is unknowingly in the car with Kearney, Dolph and Jimbo, Jimbo's hat is brown instead of its normal color, purple.
- The Rich Texan appears as the square dance caller, but is incorrectly colored.
- When Bart and Milhouse see the mountain lion in the bushes, Milhouse is barefoot. During the chase, he is now wearing his shoes.
- After the mountain lion plays with the first ball of yarn, its eyes are white instead of green.
