- Otto refuses to buy water for $8, referencing the high prices of food and water, which were widely criticized during the music festival.

- The scene itself is a parody of the famous radio scene in the 1988 film Say Anything.
- Homer sits at the kitchen table and stabs a knife into his fingers, parodying the "knife trick" scene in Aliens.
