Cultural references[edit]
- The name of the episode is a reference to the line "E-I-E-I-O!" from the nursery rhyme "Old MacDonald Had a Farm".
- Other films that are playing at the Googolplex include:
- The Buzz Cola advertisement shown before the movie is a parody of Saving Private Ryan, directed by Steven Spielberg.
- At the movie theater, when Homer has butter put on his Milk Duds to the point of overflow he says "Swim, my pretties," a parody of the Wicked Witch of the West's call to her flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz: "Fly, my pretties:". This line isn't actually said in The Wizard of Oz, but Homer is relying on popular understanding.
- The movie the Simpsons see, The Poke of Zorro, is a parody of The Mark of Zorro, The Three Musketeers, The Man in the Iron Mask, and The Scarlet Pimpernel.
- In the movie The Poke of Zorro the opera that is given at the Opera House is Georges Bizet's Carmen. The aria sung is "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle".
- The "Glove Slap" montage song is a parody of "Love Shack" by The B-52s and is played by them.
- The Southern colonel's voice is based on Foghorn Leghorn from Looney Tunes.
- The Southern colonel's RV horn plays "Dixie" by Dan Emmett.
- The Southern colonel's RV has mudflaps of him drawn like Yosemite Sam from Looney Tunes.
- The Simpsons see Jimmy Carter working for Habitat for Humanity.
- When Homer crashes the tractor, he tells Bart to go get Lassie.
- Chuck Tamzarian using an elephant to measure the height of his stalks of corn is in reference to a song in the musical Oklahoma!, wherein the corn "is as high an elephant's eye".
- Homer quotes the tagline from How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
- Homer mentions the films The Amazing Colossal Man and Beginning of the End as examples of radiation making things grow real big real fast.
- The Simpsons' farming montage music is the theme song from Green Acres.
- The Tomacco-craving animals trying to break into the barricaded farmhouse recall the zombies from George Romero's Night of the Living Dead.
- The death of the Laramie team in the helicopter, at the hands of a Tomacco-crazed sheep, is a nod to a scene in the James Cameron film Aliens, where the crew of the marines' drop-ship meet the same fate, when an alien sneaks aboard their ship.
- Chuck wears a cap with the John Deere logo.
- Inspired by the episode, Rob Baur of Lake Oswego, Oregon actually created Tomacco; both plants are members of the Nightshade family and are therefore similar enough to create a hybrid.
- Plutonium is shown as a glowing green liquid even though it is a dull silver metal with a melting point of 1183 degrees Fahrenheit. However, radioactive materials are often depicted as glowing green in popular culture.
Continuity[edit]
- Homer's childhood home on Rural Route 9 burned down in the episode "Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy" (season 6), yet it is still there in this episode. One of the official Simpsons episode guide books, The Simpsons Beyond Forever!, claims that this episode must take place before the season 6 episode. Either that, or the Rural Route 9 house was saved by the local fire department in said episode, yet in "Grampa vs. Sexual Inadequacy", you see the house collapse.
- When Principal Skinner and Mrs. Skinner first enter Moe's Tavern, the door is grey, but after they step inside, the door is brown.
- When the Simpsons sneak Homer out of the house with the Christmas tree, the tree is gray, but when they stop at Donny's Discount Gas, the Christmas tree is now green. When they resume driving the tree is gray again.
- When Lisa is criticizing the idea of the tomacco, she lifts her head up while her head's previous position stays on-screen as well. This makes it look like she has two heads at once.
