Springfield Elementary School and Prison was established after a teachers' strike disrupted operations at Springfield Elementary School.
History
The strike began when teachers, led by Edna Krabappel, protested budget cuts that had reduced salaries, supplies, maintenance, and food quality. As negotiations between the teachers and Principal Seymour Skinner reached a stalemate, classes were suspended, and substitute teachers were brought in. Eventually, while discussing possible solutions to the school's financial problems, Skinner and Krabappel devised a plan to generate additional revenue by leasing part of the school to the local prison system. The campus was subsequently transformed into Springfield Elementary School and Prison, allowing the school to raise funds and resolve the dispute while continuing to educate its students. Following the conversion, security fences and guard towers were installed, inmates were housed in former school facilities, and students attended classes while sharing the campus with prisoners.
