"Manger Things" is the sixteenth episode of broadcast season 32 of The Simpsons and the seven hundredth episode overall. It originally aired on March 21, 2021. The episode was written by Rob LaZebnik and directed by Steven Dean Moore.

Synopsis[edit]

After finding a Christmas decoration with "Todd's first Christmas" written on it, Marge tells the story of how, one Christmas, Homer got drunk, hid in a secret room in the house, and ended up helping deliver Maude's baby, Todd.

Plot[edit]

It's Christmas in Springfield, and the Simpson family are decorating the tree. Maggie tries to eat a Christmas bauble, but Bart stops her and she gives it to the cat. He then notices a decoration that says "Todd's first Christmas," which prompts a story narrated by Marge, set six years in the past.

Homer and Marge are heading to an office party at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, and Homer promises not to drink. However, Lenny and Carl spike his soda, leading him to drunkenly mock Mr. Burns when carolers start singing. Burns releases the hounds, and his ice statue slides through town until it crashes at Springfield Elementary School, where it is destroyed by Groundskeeper Willie.

Marge tells Homer it's time to leave, but he insists on filling his pants with shrimp, mayonnaise, and ketchup first. She drags him out, and they take an Uber driven by Raphael. When they arrive home, Marge refuses to let Homer in, so he wanders around town and eventually asks Ned Flanders for a place to stay.

Maude is unhappy about hosting him, and later that night, Homer eats their Christmas ham—uncooked and still in the plastic—causing hallucinations of Hell inspired by The Garden of Earthly Delights, while Marge and Abe discuss his behavior.

At home, Bart and Lisa watch an The Itchy and Scratchy Show episode when Marge informs them that Homer won't be coming back for a while. Bart thinks he's returned, but it's just a Homer snowman, which is destroyed by the wind and pecked apart by crows, frightening both kids.

At the Springfield Mall, the family shops for Christmas presents. Bart tries to buy baseball gloves for Homer, but Marge reiterates that Homer won't be back by Christmas. The Yes Guy tells Bart that if she doesn't buy them, she doesn't love him, prompting Marge to fire back that he doesn't have a happy home life.

At the Flanders house, Homer ruins grace and teaches Rod a bad word, prompting Maude to kick him out. He goes to Moe's Tavern, and Moe walks with him until they arrive back at the Simpson home.

Moe shows Homer a secret room above the garage, previously rented to an Irish family, as the only way he can stay at home. On Christmas Eve, Homer decorates the room, while Bart and Lisa decide to give up all their toys for Christmas if Homer can return.

Marge agrees, but says Homer must do one thing to make all she's put up with feel worthwhile. Homer hears this and considers baking cookies, but instead burns the kitchen. Desperate, he wishes for a miracle—and Maude provides one when her water breaks. Rod tells him that Ned is out delivering Christmas turkeys to the poor, so Homer volunteers to deliver the baby himself, unaware that Marge is watching from the doorway.

She approaches and kisses him, fixing Christmas. Ned returns and reveals that Todd's middle name is Homer, and that Maggie's is Lenny, for the same reason.

In the end, in the treehouse, Bart scares Rod and Todd with Grampa's dentures, which Grampa is searching for before heading out on a date. Meanwhile, Marge and Homer sneak into the secret room to kiss but find Moe already there. Christmas postcards show the Springfield families celebrating and exchanging gifts.

Production[edit]

At one point, It was probably going to have production code QABF14, before it switched it code with "Mother and Child Reunion".[1]
