"Yokel Hero" is the fourteenth episode of broadcast season 32 of The Simpsons and the six-hundred and ninety-eighth episode overall. It originally aired on March 7, 2021. The episode was written by Jeff Martin and Samantha Martin, and directed by Rob Oliver. It guest stars Albert Brooks as the slick manager.
Synopsis[edit]
- During a drunken night out, Homer discovers that Cletus is a talented musician whose lyrics have the power to change people. Homer and Marge help him rise to stardom, until financial opportunities come his way.
Plot[edit]
At Moe's Tavern, it's Carl's birthday when Homer receives a call from Marge telling him to come home. Homer gives Moe his car keys to keep, which Moe uses to make a copy, along with others he has collected.
Moe calls an Uber for Homer, and Barney shows up as the driver. Homer decides to walk home while Barney's drunken antics continue—asking himself to take him to Moe's even though he's already there, and giving himself five stars.
Homer wobbles home singing, but a police officer arrests him for being a danger to the city—knocking over lamp posts and causing Kirk to fall into water. From jail, he calls Marge, who tells him not to come home and throws an "I love you" note into the "missed dinners" box.
In jail, he's placed in a cell with Cletus, who sings a song about family that makes Homer reflect. When he returns home, he promises to be a "perfect example," even making Bart stand when Marge enters the room.
Homer leads them in prayer, and Marge starts to believe in his transformation. Homer closes with, "And that was that," as the credits begin to roll—only to be interrupted by Cletus breaking the fourth wall to announce there are still two more acts and a "whittled by" credit.
The next morning, Marge asks Homer if he remembers the previous night. He does—and realizes the car is missing. Moe is seen washing it at a car wash, wanting to feel what it's like to own a car.
Homer brings the family to Cletus' farm to show them the man who inspired his change. He asks to become Cletus' manager, beginning his career at Divey's Bar. Cletus signs the contract—written on a Beer of the Month Club form—and Homer officially becomes his manager.
Cletus starts performing at Divey's Bar, then at Li'l Nicer Cabaret and the Now We're Talkin' Lounge, eventually becoming so popular that he appears on The Elin Degenerous Show and in magazines, changing his life thanks to Homer. However, on a flight, Cletus fires Homer and replaces him with a professional.
At the United Parasites management company, Cletus is introduced to a slick manager, who plans to market his brew as "Spuckler Family Moonshine." Cletus signs the deal, and Homer loses the will to support what he has become. But Marge and Brandine convince him to bring Cletus back to his roots and his family.
At the Shelbyville Towers, Homer and Marge try to reason with Cletus, who refuses—until Brandine arrives with all their children, ultimately convincing him to return.
Meanwhile, the slick manager wastes no time finding a new client, but fails. In jail, Barney, Mrs. Muntz, and Snake Jailbird are in a cell, where Chief Wiggum searches for the next big talent. Snake convinces him to let him try a hacksaw—so he can escape.
Production[edit]
The episode was supposed to air on February 28, 2021, but due to "Diary Queen" being pre-empted to February 21, 2021 due to Daytona 500 delays, it was pre-empted to March 7, 2021.[1][2][3]
