Hiram Simpson was a sharecropper in Springfield during the antebellum era, working under the plantation owner Colonel Burns.

History[edit]

Hiram was the first husband of Mabel Simpson and the father of Eliza Simpson. When Eliza brought a slave she rescued, Virgil, home, Hiram was initially against the idea of housing an escaped slave but agreed once Virgil baked him some "wheel cakes." However, Colonel Burns eventually tracked Virgil down to the Simpson house and confronted Hiram about it. Hiram refused to tell Burns where Virgil was because he had sworn an oath, but Burns bribed him with a "pleasant surprise," which he accepted. Eliza tried to get Hiram to not say anything but ended up not doing anything about it, and Hiram told Burns that Virgil was in the turnip shed. The pleasant surprise turned out to be a new pair of shoes for Hiram.

After Virgil and Mabel escaped to Canada together, Mabel and Hiram got divorced, with Hiram being made to give one of his two shoes to Mabel in the divorce. However, he kept the laces.
