Hiram Simpson was a sharecropper in Springfield during the antebellum era, working under the plantation owner Colonel Burns.
History[edit]
Hiram was the first husband of Mabel Simpson and the father of Eliza Simpson. When Eliza brought a slave she rescued, Virgil, home, Hiram was initially against the idea of housing an escaped slave but agreed once Virgil baked him some "wheel cakes." However, Colonel Burns eventually tracked Virgil down to the Simpson house and confronted Hiram about it. Hiram refused to tell Burns where Virgil was because he had sworn an oath, but Burns bribed him with a "pleasant surprise," which he accepted.
