The Springfield Observatory is Springfield's astronomical observation facility.
History[edit]
The Springfield Observatory became one of the main centers of activity during the comet crisis. Principal Seymour Skinner first contacted the observatory after believing he had discovered a new celestial object, though astronomers later determined it was only the escaping Buttzilla weather balloon. Soon afterward, Bart Simpson used the observatory’s telephone line and telescope coordinates to report the real comet approaching Earth. As concern spread through Springfield, members of the Superfriends traveled to the observatory, where astronomers confirmed that the comet was on a collision course with the town. The observatory’s findings helped trigger Springfield’s emergency response and later became associated with the panic that followed the discovery. After the comet broke apart and the town survived, Moe Szyslak suggested burning down the observatory so a similar scare would “never happen again.”[1]
The observatory is seen again in the tenancy of Professor Frink, who was afraid to leave in case another group of scientists attempted to move in during his absence. It stands on a hill near the Springfield Squidport.
