A Skate with Destiny! is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #146.

Synopsis[edit]

Marge's roller skating catches the attention of the owner of the Springfield Spitfires roller derby team. She gets trained by the legendary skater Mary Tyler Maul so she can make it in the brutal world of roller derby.

Plot[edit]

Marge and Lisa are roller skating through Springfield Town Square when they see Snake steal Agnes Skinner's purse. Marge gives chase on her roller skates and catches up with the thief before he can get away, rescuing the purse. The Rich Texan saw this happen and tells Marge that he owns the Springfield Spitfires, the town's roller derby team. He asks Marge to try out for the team, and while Marge is cautious about accepting since roller derby is dangerous, Lisa convinces her to give it a try. The next day, Marge is introduced to her new teammates, most of whom immediately take a disliking to her because she's older and think that it will be fun. During practice, the rest of the team attack Marge, and she falls over the railing of the rink.

That afternoon, Homer and the kids come home to find Marge battered and bruised. Marge tells Lisa that she's quitting the team already because she doesn't think the rest of the team like her and she didn't want to lose her teeth, fingers, and toes. That night, Lisa reads Legends of Roller Derby: The Top 50 Skaters of All-Time!, which she was intending to give Marge as a gift so that some use would come from it. She decides to return the book the next day. The following day, Lisa goes to Punkberry and Springfield Roller Derby Museum to return the book and is shocked to find Mary Tyler Maul working there, as she is number 14 on the list of "Greatest Roller Derby Queens of All-Time" and was Marge's favorite skater when she was young. Lisa asks Mary to help talk Marge into not quitting the team, which she agrees to do.

Later that day, Lisa introduces Marge to Mary, and Mary offers to help train Marge to fit in with the team better. She and Lisa take Marge onto the highway, where Mary pushes her out of the truck and makes her skate down the highway, avoiding traffic. Afterward, Mary and Lisa take Marge to Ticketmaestro, where Lurleen Lumpkin is selling tickets. Lisa tells Marge that Homer is at the front of the line, which angers Marge, and she pushes through the crowd to confront him. However, she finds that Homer is actually a doppelganger who looks like him. Mary reveals that this was a trick to teach Marge to use brute force when necessary.

The night of the Springfield Spitfires bout against Duke City D.I.A. comes along, and Marge arrives to take part in it. During the bout, Marge knocks some opposing players away from Thugly Betty and slingshots her to victory. After the game, The Rich Texan reveals that Marge will be skating under the name of Mary Tyler Maul. Lisa tells Marge not to accept after everything the original Mary Tyler Maul did for her, but Marge takes the name anyway. Soon, Marge becomes popular, and her face and new name are on merchandise and magazines everywhere, which annoys the original Mary Tyler Maul. During a signing event, Snake steals Comic Book Guy's man purse, but this time Marge doesn't give chase because her ankles have been insured for a million dollars. This angers Lisa, who tells Marge that she won't be rooting for her anymore.

The championship bout against the Shelbyville She-Devils comes along, and Lisa refuses to go and watch Marge. When Marge gets to the locker room, Mary Tyler Maul approaches her and gives Marge her old roller skates, but also tells Marge that she has to figure out that continuing down the path she's on will cost her her relationship with her biggest fan, Lisa. The bout starts and the She-Devils take the lead due to Marge being distracted. During a break, Marge notices Lisa in the audience. Marge tells Lisa that she got caught up in her alias and forgot the reason she joined the team in the first place and goes on to try and win the bout for Lisa and the original Mary Tyler Maul. A few minutes later, Marge is catching up with Fouly McBeal in an attempt to win the bout. However, the wheels on one of her skates fall off, with one of them hitting Fouly McBeal and knocking her over the railing. Marge struggles to keep going with only one set of wheels and falls over right by the finish line. However, her hair passes over it, winning the championship for the Spitfires.

As the team and family celebrate Marge's win, Homer is offered a celebratory cigar by The Rich Texan. Lighting it sets the Marge wig he was wearing on fire. Soon, every other wig in the stadium is also on fire and the Duff Arena burns down. Everyone gets out safely, and the Simpsons walk home.
