- Santa's Little Helper and Snowball II are watching a Lassie show on television.
- Principal Skinner points out the constellation Orion to Bart.
- The "Three Wise Men" constellation is an image of The Three Stooges.
- Principal Skinner says he missed the chance to name a comet after himself once, but a Principal Kohoutek reported it just before him, a reference to the Comet Kohoutek discovered by Luboš Kohoutek.
- The scene of Reverend Lovejoy panicking and saying that it's all over is a reference to the character Claymore Gregg from The Ghost & Mrs. Muir, played by Charles Nelson Reilly, who would act in a similar way in the show.
- Kent Brockman references Icarus flying too close to the Sun when he says that the rocket foolishly flew too high.
