Gilbert Stuart was an American portrait painter.
History[edit]
After Hans Sprungfeld, later known as Jebediah Springfield, attempted to kill George Washington in Trenton, New Jersey, Washington's portrait was being painted by Gilbert Stuart. During the attack, Hans stepped onto the painting while the paint was still wet. The wet paint stuck to his boot, causing him to tear off the lower portion of the canvas as he fled.
Years later, Lisa Simpson discovered that the missing portion of the portrait had become the material on which Hans had written his secret confession. She realized that the incomplete Washington portrait was the missing piece that connected the confession to Hans Sprungfeld.
