- The episode title is a reference to the film Red Planet.
- In the episode select screen the various icons are:
- Disney+ size, a Disney for plus sizes.
- Marble, a parody of Marvel.
- Cosmic Wars, a parody of Star Wars.
- Mixar, a parody of Pixar.
- Nat-Gee-D'oh, a parody of National Geographic.
- The episode is a National Geographic-style mockumentary.
- A similar episode aired in Futurama, "Naturama", where characters are depicted as animal equivalents.
- The narrator refers to the beluga whale as a "Darwinian whoopsie."
- The song sung by the beluga whales and the narwhals, "Summer Days", is a parody of "Summer Nights" from the musical Grease.
- The Moe fish says that he's twenty thousand leagues over Homer beluga whale's league, a reference to Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas.

- The episode is the last to have Pamela Hayden in the cast, as for her retirement; however, the last episode she recorded was "O C'mon All Ye Faithful".
- Contrary to previous shorts or specials releasing at the same time everywhere in the world, this episode was released at midnight local time.
- A character who has the same model as Diego from "A Star Is Born Again" is the cameraman filming lions.
