South Park is an American animated television program created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It has been airing since August 13, 1997 on Comedy Central. The two series have referenced each other numerous times.

References to South Park in The Simpsons[edit]

  • Butters will have beer cans shaken up by electronic paint mixers, as seen in "So It's Come to This: A Simpsons Clip Show".
  • Butters then gets the idea to build a machine that removes the cherries from chocolate-covered cherries and replaces them with mayonnaise filling. However, his idea's originality is cut short when he sees a promo on TV for a new (fictitious) episode of the Simpsons, where Bart does the exact same thing.
  • Eric Cartman grows a race of Sea Creatures that evolves and worships him as their creator, as seen in "Treehouse of Horror VII", in the segment "The Genesis Tub".

By the end of the episode, Butters has been driven insane and begins seeing the townspeople and geography of South Park as they would look on the Simpsons. The South Park characters and their Simpsons counterparts Butters' sees in his hallucinations are listed below:

South Park - Cartoon Wars Part II.pngSouth Park - Cartoon Wars Part II - Bart Simpson's chalkboard gag.png 10 143 "Cartoon Wars Part II" Eric Cartman meets the main character of The Simpsons, Bart Simpson (voiced by Mona Marshall), who appears to share his hatred of Family Guy. The pair help each other bring an end to Family Guy, but Bart's opinion changes after Kyle Broflovski gives him one of his "gay little speeches". A chalkboard gag also appears on this episode. Bart writes in the alleyway "I hate Family Guy" repeatedly with a chalk. Unlike the way he's animated on The Simpsons, on South Park, Bart can clearly see his hair line, where it is a slightly yellower color than his skin.
SP1806 donut.png 18 253 "Freemium Isn't Free" When the Minister of Mobile Gaming is talking about fake currency, donuts appear on the whiteboard. Donuts are the premium currency in The Simpsons: Tapped Out.
The Problem With a Poo.png 22 290 "The Problem with a Poo" After he is exiled from South Park for a series of crude, offensive social media posts, Mr. Hankey goes off to find a place that accepts offensive people like him. He ends up in Springfield where he is welcomed by Apu. After this, the hashtag #cancelthesimpsons appears (referencing the season's early promotional campaign #cancelsouthpark, meant to skewer cancel culture). This, and the episode's title, is a reference to the documentary The Problem with Apu.
