Synopsis

"When Bart finds Edna Krabappel's old diary at Ned's garage sale, he reads that his old teacher thought he had potential. After becoming a better person because of this thought, Lisa has to break the news to Bart that Krabappel wasn't referring to him."

Plot

Ned Flanders is holding a garage sale, and the people of Springfield sing their way to his house. Many people buy his stuff, but then bullies, Lenny, and Carl start destroying the items they purchased. Ned gets angry when he sees this and realizes he only made $27 from the sale.

Bart and Milhouse buy a bunch of his books and use them to start a fire, which Bart jumps over. After a failed recording of his antics, Bart sits on a log and picks up a barely burned diary. He discovers it belongs to Edna Krabappel and tries to throw it into the river before fleeing after they accidentally witness the Springfield Mafia dumping a body in it.

At Bart's treehouse, they begin reading the diary and discover where Superintendent Chalmers keeps his car keys, which they use to steal his car. Using the teacher's lounge code, Bart enters the room and discovers that the teachers are secretly working a second job as a call center.

At Our Lady of Springfield church, Bart finds out that Edna believed he had potential, imagining himself as a presidential chair tester. Inspired, Bart starts helping around the school and earns an "A" on a test. At dinner, the family celebrates with a cake, but Marge and Lisa suspect he cheated. Lisa later discovers the diary in the treehouse and realizes that the feelings Edna wrote about were not for Bart but for her cat.

Lisa decides to lie to Bart, which gives her anxiety and stress bumps. Bart helps Willie too, giving him a pet bunny. Lisa is prescribed Xanax. At the Improvement Day awards, Bart is recognized for his accomplishments and is invited to participate in the Spelling Bee. Before he embarrasses himself, Lisa tells him the truth.

At the treehouse, Marge tries to console Bart but fails. That night, Ned visits him and tells him that he and Edna once considered leaving town but ultimately stayed. They had a family meeting to vote, and Edna chose to remain in order to help boys like Bart—boys who need to recognize the good trapped inside of them that is trying to get out.

Bart gives the diary back to Ned, who reads a paragraph in which Edna reflects on their time together, saying it made her life a living dream come true. A montage of the pictures in the diary is then shown in her memory.
