"Beauty and the Beast" is a fairy tale written by French novelist Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve, which has been adapted notably for screen, stage, prose, and television over many years. The most famous film adaptations are Jean Cocteau's La Belle et la Bête (1946) and the 1991 animated feature by the Walt Disney Studios, which won two Oscars for Best Original Song and Best Original Score and became the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture. Between 1987 and 1990, there was also a Beauty and the Beast live-action TV series on CBS. Most references in The Simpsons to Beauty and the Beast refer to the 1991 Disney film.
