Cultural references[edit]
- The episode title is a reference to the 1971 film Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song.
- In the episode's couch gag, the Simpsons step on the FOX logo.

The home movie sequence parodies the opening sequence of The Wonder Years, including the use of Joe Cocker's version of "With a Little Help from My Friends".
- The episode opens with home movies showing Homer and Marge as young adults, similar to the opening sequence of The Wonder Years in its first five seasons, showing scenes with Kevin Arnold (Fred Savage) and his friends and family.
- The music playing in the background is Joe Cocker's cover of "With a Little Help from My Friends", which is also used in the opening sequence of The Wonder Years.
- Homer shows the camera the book Sebastian Cabot's Beard Book, written by Sebastian Cabot, a distinguished British actor renowned for his iconic beard. The book features a foreword by American country singer Willie Nelson, who is also famously known for his beard.
- Bart erroneously picks up a trilobite and petrified wood when trying to grab Lisa's geodes.
- According to Miss Hoover, Ralph once said that the fictional cartoon character Snagglepuss was outside the class at Springfield Elementary School.
- Seymour Skinner misunderstands the words "Yom Kippur", said by a Jewish student named Weinstein. Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year in Judaism.
- The sequence where Groundskeeper Willie chases Santa's Little Helper through the air ducts parodies scenes from the first three Alien movies.
- The idea Skinner has for a book is the same as the story of Jurassic Park.
- Ned asks Bart if he was drinking Slice, a now-retired fruit-flavored soft drink, or Yoo-hoo, an American brand of chocolate-flavored beverage.
- Principal Skinner is conducting a recording of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 5.
- Skinner offers Bart a Dr Pepper carbonated soft drink.
- According to Skinner, he was shot in the back during a Bob Hope show in Vietnam. American comedian and entertainer Bob Hope was known for his USO shows to entertain troops during the Vietnam War, among other major wars. Skinner was shot for telling actress and sex symbol Joey Heatherton to put some pants on. Joey performed along with Bob Hope in his USO tours.
- The combat veteran at Fort Springfield says to Skinner that he received a number of medals for "securing a Montgomery Ward in Kuwait City". He is referring to Montgomery Ward, an American retail corporation, and to Kuwait City, the capital of Kuwait, which was a critical location during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in 1990, an invasion that marked the beginning of the Gulf War.

Skinner resembles Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) from the 1987 war film Full Metal Jacket. The marching song is also a common element in the film.
- Skinner's attire and shots of him running with his troops parody the character Gunnery Sergeant Hartman (R. Lee Ermey) and the marching song scenes in the 1987 war film Full Metal Jacket.
- The Parthenon is mentioned in the marching song.
- Lisa tells Bart that everybody needs a nemesis and cites:
- Dr. Moriarty, the criminal mastermind and enemy of the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes.
- Mello Yello, a highly caffeinated, citrus-flavored soft drink introduced in 1972 to compete with Mountain Dew.
- When Bart and Principal Skinner realize that they will need to return to being enemies if Skinner resumes his position as school principal, Skinner, fondly remembering their time as friends, says, "We'll always have the laundromat." Skinner's line is a reference to Humphrey Bogart's line "We'll always have Paris" from Casablanca.
- The song Martin sings while in the cage is the "Toreador Song" from the French opera Carmen.
