- The title of the episode is a pun on Reality Bites, a 1994 American romantic comedy-drama film, and the word "realty", commonly used in America and Canada to refer to the real property.
- In the episode's chalkboard gag, the name "Fartacus" is a reference to gladiator Spartacus.
- Johnny D's prisoner number, "5F06," is the production code for this episode.
- Snake's car, Lil' Bandit, has an Edelbrock intake manifold.
- Bart mentions Superman.
- When Lisa had to learn about the Magna Carta, the English royal charter from the year 1215, she made up a song to the tune of "Camptown Races" by Stephen Foster.
- The song made to help Marge memorize the Real Estate Law is also to the tune of "Camptown Races". In this version, the United States government-sponsored enterprise Fannie Mae is mentioned.
- While taking the exam, Marge hums "Swanee River", also by Stephen Foster.
- Gil Gunderson consumes Bromo-Seltzer, an American brand of antacid formulated to relieve pain.
- Dr. Hibbert wears a sweater with the style of those worn by Bill Cosby.
- The Murder House is based on the Bates' house from the 1960 horror film Psycho.
- When trying to kill Homer to get his car to a stop, Snake uses piano wire from the Acme Corporation, the fictional company originating in Looney Tunes.
- Before being attacked by Snake, Homer was singing Suzanne Vega's 1987 famous hit "Luka".
- Todd repeating "Red room" is a reference to Danny Torrance (Danny Lloyd) writing and repeating the word "REDRUM" in The Shining.
- Former writer of The Simpsons George Meyer and 41st President of the USA George H. W. Bush are seen at the Springfield Office of Unemployment.

- Originally, the piano wire was supposed to cut Kirk's sandwich, until George Meyer asked if it could cut off his arm.
- Among the people at the unemployment office are Larry Burns, Lurleen Lumpkin, Kirk Van Houten and George Meyer.
- This is the last speaking role of Lionel Hutz.
- The murder house is modeled after the Bates home in Alfred Hitchcock's movie Psycho.
- The number on Snake's prison uniform is "7F20", this is the production code for the episode "The War of the Simpsons" which was the episode Snake first appeared in.
- The number on Johnny D's prison uniform is "5F06", the production code for this episode.
Goofs[edit]
- The house that Lionel Hutz says is on fire is actually not on fire.
- In the 'dog house', in the doorway there are dogs staring out of the open door. The dogs do not have bodies.
- In one scene at Red Blazer Realty, it shows Marge from the behind. In that shot, she is not wearing her blazer, however in the previous and next shot she is.
- When Marge finishes spinning upon receiving her blazer, Gil and Nick Callahan have their colors switched.
