- Comic Book Guy goes to Springfield Dry Cleaners to get his disguises of Spock, Batman and Spider-Man. He also mentions that his Batman suit has been shredded by The Riddler, the supervillain from DC Comics.
- Homer mentions famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright after Lisa questions him for making the plans for a go-kart track instead of a treehouse.
- One of the Amish says "to the buggymobile", a reference to "to the batmobile", while the "Batman Theme" by Neal Hefti is heard.
- The scene were the Amish build Bart's new treehouse is a reference to the 1985 film Witness.
- Marge prefers the Amish over the Mennonites, another Christian group.
- The Homer ice sculpture is a reference to Auguste Rodin's The Thinker.
- Snowball II drinks Kahlúa, a coffee liqueur from Veracruz, Mexico, and cream.
- Luigi Risotto makes lasagna for Snowball II and mentions that the cat from the newspaper is not funny, referring to Garfield.
- When Mayor Quimby renames the Springfield Dog Park to the Snowball II Municipal Cat Park, he says "Ich bin ein Feline". This is a reference to "Ich bin ein Berliner", John F. Kennedy's famous speech during the Cold War.
- When Homer is talking to Kent Brockman about how deep his love for cats is, Homer says that for him "Yusuf Islam will always be Cat Stevens". The artist adopted the name Yusuf Islam when he converted to Islam in 1977.
- Kent also mentions the Broadway musical Cats.
- Lisa wants Santa's Little Helper to be like Rin Tin Tin, the German Shepherd who became an international star in motion pictures.
- When Homer imagines himself traveling on Duff's corporate jet, he asks the pilot to take him to Heidelberg, Germany to attend the Oktoberfest.
- Santa's Little Helper's alter ego "Suds McDuff" is a reference to the old Bud Light mascot Spuds MacKenzie.
- "The Blue Danube" by Johann Strauss II is briefly heard during the Duff commercial. The International Space Station appears on the commercial as well.
- Marge mentions the fast-food restaurant chain Arby's.
- Santa's Little Helper is the guest on Live With Regis and Kelly, an American morning talk show. Regis Philbin orders Michael Gelman, the show executive producer, to roll a clip in which the dog is playing on Pyramid, an US game show.
- When Les Moore makes Santa's Little Helper sign its book "I, Suds", Marge thinks Moore "exploits his pets worse than Bob Guccione". This is a reference to Bob Guccione, who was the publisher of the magazine Penthouse, a competitor of Playboy. Guccione's "pets" Marge was referring to were the Penthouse "Pets" models from the magazine.
- "The Star-Spangled Banner" is heard when Howard K. Duff VIII introduces Santa's Little Helper as "King Suds McDuff of Sixpakistan", a play-on six-pack and Pakistan.
- When the shark appears, Homer mentions the young naked lady who gets killed in the first Jaws movie.
- The episode ends with the disclaimer: "No dogs were harmed in the filming of this episode. A cat got sick and somebody shot a duck, but that's it."
Continuity[edit]
- In this episode, Duffman says that his name is Barry. In the comic story Locked in a Brewery, Duffman is again referred to as Barry, multiple times.
