The Department of Child Welfare is a government agency designed to protect children from abuse and neglect.

History[edit]

After Principal Seymour Skinner reported concerns about the Simpson children, the department inspected the Simpson residence and documented several conditions they considered signs of neglect, including dirty dishes, accumulated trash, old newspapers, and Maggie Simpson drinking from the family dog's water bowl. Concluding that the children were living in an unsafe environment, the agency removed Bart, Lisa, and Maggie from their parents' custody and placed them with Ned and Maude Flanders as foster parents.

The department prohibited Homer and Marge Simpson from communicating with their children and required them to remain at least one hundred feet away. A court later ordered the parents to attend a "Family Skills" course supervised by Officer Goodman. Upon successfully completing the program and passing drug tests, Homer and Marge regained custody of their children, and the department ended its intervention.
