Cultural references
- The video game Bonestorm is based on the Mortal Kombat series.
- Video game characters that appear to Bart include Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, Lee Carvallo, and Sonic the Hedgehog. Of the five, Lee Carvallo is the only one that tried to talk Bart out of shoplifting.
- The episode features Allan Sherman's song, Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh, played on the answering service in lieu of Don Brodka's message about catching Bart shoplifting.
- Among the games seen at Try-N-Save, a number of them reference pop-culture:
- The episode also mentions rapper and actor Tupac Shakur.
- Many clues point to the fact that "Bonestorm" is a game released for the Sega Mega Drive (Sega Genesis in North America).
- The console which plays "Bonestorm" uses cartridges.
- The boxes are snap-open video cases, unlike the Super Nintendo's plain boxes, and the Sony Playstation's jewel cases.
- The graphics for the game are rather blocky, just like video game consoles of the time.
- In the commercial at the beginning, it shows that there is blood in the game. The Sega Mega Drive version of "Mortal Kombat", which "Bonestorm" is based, shows blood (only through a cheat code, but still. The Super Nintendo version of Mortal Kombat never had blood either, so it is likely that it isn't in the Super Nintendo of "Bonestorm", if any, either.
Goofs
- Maggie appears in every Christmas photo even though she is just one year old.
- The game Celebrity Tutopsy should be "Celebrity Autopsy". This is most likely an animation error.
