Cultural references[edit]

Erin calls Bart "Dennis the Menace" due to the slingshot he is carrying. Rick also mentions Mr. Wilson, the cantankerous neighbour of Dennis
  • Erin asks if Bart thinks he's Dennis the Menace because of the slingshot he is carrying. Rick also mentions Mr. Wilson, another of the characters from Dennis the Menace.
  • Lisa said she learned the word "crustacean" from Baywatch, the famous action drama television series about lifeguards.
  • At the Li'l Valu-Mart storage room:
    • When Homer is trying to buy fireworks, he asks for all sorts of embarrassing items, whilst asking for fireworks in the middle. This is a parody to the scene where Terry "The Toad" Fields (Charles Martin Smith) tries to get some "Old Harper" liquor in the 1973 coming-of-age drama American Graffiti.
      • The liquor "Old Harper" from American Graffiti is among the items ordered by Homer.
    • The poster with the phrase "Yang Tse Doodle Fireworks" is a reference to "Yankee Doodle", a patriotic American tune often associated with fireworks and celebrations, especially on the Fourth of July. The dragon and "Yang Tse", a pun on Yangtze, reference China, a large manufacturer of fireworks.
    • The poster "Play More with Claymore" is a reference to the Claymore mine, an explosive weapon.
  • The drapes in the beach house are Jesus Fish.
  • Erin said her mother would show up with Rice Krispies squares and Tang juice.
  • Dean's mother is French, and they only celebrate Bastille Day, the national day of France.
  • "All Summer Long" by The Beach Boys plays over the end credits, again another reference to American Graffiti.

Trivia[edit]

  • The firecracker that Homer attempts to use to celebrate the Fourth of July (and is later forced to use in the washing machine, rupturing a disposal pipe in the process) is called the M-320.
  • The sea creature that Milhouse thinks is a dog is a horseshoe crab, and it "wags" it's tail when Milhouse pets it.
  • Ben (one of the cool kids) later appears in "Cool Lisa"'s questline in The Simpsons: Tapped Out.

Goofs[edit]

Marge's white pearls
  • In the opening scene, the pens in Martin's pocket are white instead of their usual purple.
  • When Lisa first meets the skater kids, she's wearing her glasses in one shot but they disappear in the next. Then they reappear in front of the library.
  • Right before Bart and Lisa fight at the table, Marge's necklace is colored white.
  • At Ned's beach house, there is a picture of Maude above the bed Lisa was sitting on. When the camera angle changes, the picture changes to a photo of Rod and Todd.
