At the 2022 D23 Expo, The Simpsons presented a panel featuring creator Matt Groening, voice actress Yeardley Smith, director David Silverman, showrunners Al Jean and Matt Selman, and writers Tim Long and Rob LaZebnik. The event promoted the series' upcoming 34th season and Disney+ projects, while also featuring announcements about new episodes, Halloween specials, and guest stars. The presentation concluded with an animated segment in which Homer Simpson answered questions from the audience and parodied Disney and Marvel's franchise presentations.
Plot
The animated segment began with Homer responding to questions from the audience. Winnie the Pooh then appeared and challenged Homer's description of an earlier encounter as a "super fun adventure." Pooh explained that Homer had actually broken into Pooh Corner, tied him up, and stolen his honey. Homer dismissed the incident by saying they had only been playing a game. Pooh then accused Homer of sitting on Piglet and making him more depressed than Eeyore. Homer addressed him as a "silly old bear," to which Pooh replied, "Oh, bother."
Homer next turned to the subject of romance and proposed auctioning Springfield's most eligible bachelors to the audience. Moe Szyslak was introduced first, followed by Professor Frink, Grandpa Simpson, and Comic Book Guy, each receiving jokes about their personalities and lack of romantic prospects. Homer eventually concluded that there would be no more romance that season. The segment ended with Winnie the Pooh and Selma Bouvier appearing together and taking each other's hands, suggesting a new romantic pairing. Another audience question asked whether The Simpsons would incorporate classic Disney animation techniques to coincide with Disney Animation's centennial. Krusty the Clown answered the question, joking about the D23 Expo and the show's limited Disney budget before demonstrating what the production could supposedly afford.
The main part of the segment began when an audience member asked when the next Simpsons movie would be released. Homer admitted that he did not know and asked the audience whether they actually wanted another Simpsons movie. After the audience responded enthusiastically, Homer declared that it was the perfect opportunity to announce the "Simpsons Cinematic Universe." He then presented its fictional "Phase Five," parodying Marvel Studios' method of announcing future projects. The slate consisted of Iron Moe, Sea Captain America, Groundskeepers of the Galaxy, SelmaVision, and Moon Knight.
The announcement was then interrupted by the Blue-haired lawyer, who informed Homer that he had a telephone call from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige. Surprised to hear Feige's name, Homer answered the call and initially reacted enthusiastically to what he was being told, saying that it sounded like a great idea and that he wanted to proceed. He then changed his response, and the word “CANCELLED” appeared across the posters of the proposed films, indicating that the "Simpsons Cinematic Universe" had been called off. Homer then announced that there would be “no new movie.” However, he added, “Unless…”, at which point a poster for Nedpool appeared, revealing one final proposed film.
