- The episode title is a pun to the reality TV series Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.
- The second poster is a parody of one of the posters for the 2006 anime film Paprika.

- The segment is inspired the works of American writer John Cheever, most notably The Swimmer, and the film The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit, and the TV series Mad Men.
- The art style of the segment was based on 1950s advertising by artists such as Bob Peak while the beatnik animation style is based on the style of Jules Feiffer.[1]
- Homer survived the Normandy landings in World War II.
