Worst Competition Ever! is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #145.

Synopsis

Homer and Bart find Grampa's old comic books and open a comic book store. Homer begins to behave like Comic Book Guy, who is forced to close his shop.

Plot

Homer and Bart are in the attic while looking through boxes to clear out. Bart finds a box of Grampa's old comics and realizes that they're worth a fortune. Homer and Bart decide to sell the comics to use the money to make their dreams come true. When Lisa finds that they're selling them on eBuy, she asks if Grampa knows that they're doing this. Bart agrees with Lisa that they should ask Grampa if he's okay with it and Homer calls his father. Grampa doesn't realize that it's Homer on the phone and thinks someone is trying to sell him comic books. The directors of the Springfield Retirement Castle come in and tell Grampa that to raise funds to renovate the building, they need him to wear a uniform with sponsorships on. Forgetting that he's on the phone still, Grampa tells the directors that if it will make a few bucks, he'll wear it. Homer hears this and takes it for agreement for him to sell the comics.

A few weeks later, Comic Book Guy walks to The Android's Dungeon and is shocked to see The Graphic Hovel opening up across the street. He goes there to confront Homer and Bart but doesn't think their store will last too long. However, Bart gives out free comics to other kids to get them to come to The Graphic Hovel. That afternoon, there is a line to get in to The Graphic Hovel, which shocks Comic Book Guy. He goes to the store and is shocked to see that they have a copy of Adrenaline Comics #1, which features the first appearance of Radioactive Man ans is one of the rarest comic books in existence, for sale. Chief Wiggum then shows up to arrest Comic Book Guy, as Bart called the police due to him making a scene.

A couple of weeks later, Bart and Milhouse rush to The Graphic Hovel for new comic book day. However, Homer, who is started to resemble Comic Book Guy, tells Bart to help him with the store instead. It's not just Homer's appearance that begins to resemble Comic Book Guy, but his personality as well. Homer starts recreating scenes from The Lord of the Rings and binges Battlestar Galactica, and complains to comic book creators about their comic books. Meanwhile, Comic Book Guy is struggling financially due to the loss of customers. He starts taking other jobs to get the money to keep The Android's Dungeon open, but he struggles in every job he takes. Eventually, he gets a job at the Retirement Castle, standing outside of it in a silly costume with a sign to advertise it.

Bart no longer thinks running The Graphic Hovel is fun because he just wants to read comics. When he arrives at the store, he finds Marge having her book club there. Thinking that this is worse than his worst nightmare, Bart goes to The Android's Dungeon but finds that it's closed. He leaves and comes across Comic Book Guy outside the Retirement Castle. He questions why he's there and why the Retirement Castle needs someone to advertise it and Comic Book Guy tells Bart that he can no longer afford to keep The Android's Dungeon open, and the Retirement Castle is also in dire financial straits. Bart goes to visit Grampa and finds that his room is in awful condition. Bart says that he would have come sooner if he knew how bad it was, but he and Homer got so caught up in selling his comic books. Grampa is confused because he doesn't remember giving permission to sell them, which annoys Bart because he thought Homer got permission. The directors of the Retirement Castle come in the room and put a notice to condemn up, letting Comic Book Guy know that his employment will no longer be needed. Bart comes up with a solution to all their problems.

The next day, Homer leaves work at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant and goes to The Graphic Hovel. However, when he arrives, he finds that the entire store has been cleared out. After attempting to call the police, Homer goes to The Android's Dungeon to confront Comic Book Guy and is shocked to see Bart there too. Homer tries to stop Comic Book Guy from selling Adrenaline Comics #1 to The Rich Texan, but Bart and Grampa stop him because they weren't his comics to sell. Homer apolgizes to Bart because he thought they were having fun making money. Bart tells him that they don't need the money, Grampa does. Bart reveals that Grampa sold his entire comic collection to Comic Book Guy for one dollar, with Comic Book Guy using the profits from Adrenaline Comics #1 to pay for the repairs for the Retirement Castle, with the rest of the comics going to him for honoring the deal. Homer is dragged off by Lou and Eddie, who just turned up. Soon, all the kids in Springfield come back to The Android's Dungeon and Bart and Milhouse consider digging through the attic again to find any other old stuff they could sell.
