Cultural references

• The name of the episode is a reference to the TV series Stranger Things.
• A cover of the orchestral piece Boléro by Pink Martini can be heard during the episode's couch gag, which was animated and directed by Bill Plympton.

• Sideshow Mel is shown as Krusty's sidekick. This is an continuity error; Sideshow Bob is shown to be Krusty's sidekick is past scenes in various episodes, including "Lisa's Sax", along with the fact that he was replaced by Mel after framing Krusty for armed robbery in the present day events of the show (season 1's "Krusty Gets Busted"). Mel becomes Krusty's newest sideshow in between "Krusty Gets Busted" and season 3's "Black Widower", while the main events of this episode are six years into the past.
