History
According to Mayor Quimby, Charlotte had once been named "Hitler City".
Behind the Laughter
Many American communities with names of German origin were renamed due to anti-German sentiment particularly in the wake of America's entry into World War I.
Charlotte had the same name since the city was chattered by North Carolina General Assembly in 1768 and named for Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, a German princess and reigning King George III's queen-consort.
