• The episode title is a wordplay on the labor law term "hostile workplace".
• The storybook telling of the story is a parody of Dr. Seuss books.
  • The narrator has a voice like that of Boris Karloff, who had narrated How the Grinch Stole Christmas!.
  • Barney is seen puking in a blue version of the hat from The Cat in the Hat.
• Groundskeeper Willie reads Weeder's Digest, a parody of Reader's Digest.
• The fuse box in Springfield Elementary has a "Vote Aye on Scottish Independence" badge in, a reference to the 2014 Scottish independence referendum.
• The label on the Iraq War Surplus Mayonnaise can shows President George W. Bush saying "Delicious Accomplished", a reference to his infamous Mission Accomplished speech. On the label he is dressed as he was when he gave the speech.
