Cultural references[edit]

- Homer and Bart won a Wookiee-skin rug in the father/son costume contest at Springfield Comic-Con for their costumes.
- Tales from the Litterbox is a parody of the Tales from the Crypt comics.
- Comic Book Guy tells Bart that he could have the ghosts of Jack Kirby and Will Eisner in the back room creating comics by hand, and it still won't help his new comic store.
- The Graphic Hovel has a cutout of Superman in it.
- Adrenaline Comics #1 is a parody of Action Comics #1, which featured the first appearance of Superman. Similarly, Adrenaline Comics #1 features the first appearance of Radioactive Man.
- When Comic Book Guy is being dragged out of the store, he tells Bart to "remember, the Death Star wasn't built in a day."
- Homer plays with his spaghetti and meatballs, making a "Mount Spaghett-dor", and tells Bart to destroy the one meatball to rule them all inside its fiery marinar-y pit, a reference to Mordor and the One Ring from The Lord of the Rings.
- Homer calls in sick to work so he can watch a Battlestar Galactica marathon on TV. Homer says that he has a mean case of the Tricia Helfers. Helfer played Number Six in Battlestar Galactica.
- Homer goes to a meet-up with comic book creator and screenwriter Frank Miller. He asks Miller when they can expect a sequel to 3000. Miller tells him never, the Spartans all died, and his graphic novel is called 300.
- While at his second job at the Kwik-E-Mart, Comic Book Guy sprays Hans Moleman with Squishee and tells him "drop it, Artful Dodger." when Moleman tries to take a penny from the "take a penny, leave a penny" tray. Artful Dodger is a character from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens.
- Bob Barker is one of the words that Comic Book Guy is told not to say to Mr. Burns' hounds.
- Homer tells Helen Lovejoy to come back in a few weeks when the newest issue of Desperate Housewives: The Comic is out.
- When Homer thinks he's calling for the police, he demands to have Jack Bauer from 24 sent to the comic store.
- When Homer crosses the road, narrowly avoiding being hit by Otto in the school bus, Otto tells Homer that he almost climbed the "Stairway to Heaven", a song by Led Zeppelin.
- The Rich Texan owns a copy of Roger Staubach, Cowboy in Space, which he has on his study wall. Staubach is an American former professional football quarterback.
- Among the other items in the Simpsons' attic are:
- A dress from The Seven Year Itch.
- The sled from Citizen Kane.
- Honus Wagner baseball cards.
- Top Secret Area 51 files.
- Dinosaur eggs.
- Adolf Hitler's diary.
Continuity[edit]
- When Comic Book Guy finds out that The Graphic Hovel is opening on his turf, he says "not again", a reference to the opening of Coolsville Comics & Toys in the TV episode "Husbands and Knives".
