Luboš Kohoutek is a Czech astronomer.
History[edit]
During an early morning astronomy session near Springfield Elementary School, Principal Seymour Skinner showed Bart Simpson several constellations visible in the sky, including Orion, the Swan, and the Chariot Race. After Bart commented that the constellations did not look like the figures they were supposed to represent, Skinner explained that astronomy depended heavily on imagination. He later pointed toward another group of stars and referred to it as the Three Wise Men.
When Bart asked who named constellations, Skinner explained that the discoverers traditionally named them. He recalled that he once believed he had discovered something important, but by the time he reached a telephone, the discovery had already been reported by Principal Kahoutek. Skinner later claimed that he “got back at him, though… him and that little boy of his.”
Behind the Laughter[edit]
Kahoutek was a reference to Comet Kohoutek, the real comet discovered by astronomer Luboš Kohoutek in 1973, which became famous after being heavily publicized as a spectacular celestial event but ultimately appearing much less impressive than expected.
