Synopsis
- "When Larry the barfly passes away in Moe's Tavern, the other barflies take his ashes to scatter them at Serenity Falls. Along the way, they discover that Larry had been smuggling sapphires for the mob, who come to collect their property."
Plot
At Moe's Tavern, Homer, Lenny and Carl are watching the NFL while drinking beer. They have bet on the matches and convince Moe to try betting, which he agrees to after some resistance. When he loses the bet, he pushes everyone out of the tavern, but when he tries to push out Larry, they find out he's dead.
At the Mourning Glory Funeral Home, a funeral is held in his honor. Bart and Lisa, already bored, visit other funerals. Back at Larry's funeral, Reverend Lovejoy arrives and thinks that it's Homer's funeral, starting to say some words for him, but Mrs. Glick corrects him, and he calls Larry's mother, Iris Dalrymple, who calls forth his friends to talk about him.
But they don't know him at all and invent some story about fishing with him. When Marge calls them out, they tell her that at least they came to the funeral, which Barney did not even do, being a selfish jerk. Barney is then seen in a village helping them create a clean water well.
After the funeral, Marge continues to point out how disappointed she is with them, and Iris arrives, giving them Larry's diary, where there's a drawing of all five of them in front of Serenity Falls, so they decide to take his ashes there. At Acceptable 8, they spend the night after an argument about where the soul goes after death.
The next morning, Homer goes to the bathroom but knocks the urn down, revealing sapphires hidden within the ashes, which Moe identifies and wants to keep secret from the other two. They get back on the road, and Lenny and Carl fight over Naima dating Kool, and ride dangerously offroad, almost knocking the urn down. But when Lenny pushes the pedal too strongly, the back of the truck opens up, rolling the urn down the road.
The four argue over the deal before the sheriff calls them out for jewel smuggling and throws them in his car's frunk, where they argue over their lies, thinking that when they're sober they're not a group anymore. They then find out that the sheriff is Mickey No-Loose-Ends, working for Fat Tony to recover the ashes with the sapphires, and he orders him to let them go. However, true to his name, he understands he has to cut the loose ends.
Fearing death, Homer finds a flare gun and tries to shoot Mickey when he opens the frunk, but misses and pushes the car down a ravine, barely stopping before falling down. However, they all jump out of the car at the same time, except Homer, who counts wrong and falls down. Mickey gets knocked down and lets the urn go down the ravine to where Homer is, stopping the car safely and saving him.
The drive brings them together at Serenity Falls, but they soon realize where Larry wanted to be with them—under a video of the falls at Moe's Tavern. In the end, the sapphires from the urn are lost, but Moe reveals that he ingested them and they're in his stomach.
Reception
"Cremains of the Day" was nominated for a 2025 Writers Guild of America Award for Television: Animation.[1]
