• The title of the episode refers to the Saga, which is a prose story and history composed in Iceland, and a main element in this episode.
• The Eastern Europe tennis players on the Woman's Doubles Final have names similar to those of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Petra Kvitová.

The Ninja from the Black Lagoon is a reference to the 1954 film Creature from the Black Lagoon

• Bart and Lisa watched Ki-Ya Karate Monsters instead of Planet Jackson and the Earth Brigade, a parody of the animated TV series Captain Planet and the Planeteers.

• The number plate of the Fjord Fjiesta that Homer, Moe, and Lenny rented in Iceland is RABF14, the production code for the episode.
• When Homer, Lenny, and Moe are studying Old Icelandic, one of the words they learn is "Forvitinn", meaning "nosy". Upon their arrival in the country, an Icelander described his fellow citizens as "very nosy".
• Carl's family tree says nothing about Carlotta Carlson. This may have been because his sister wasn't adopted by his adoptive family and he may have met her at a later period, when he had moved to the USA.
  • Carl's biological father has been seen once before. It is likely that Carl knows about him through his sister.
