Cultural references[edit]
- Milhouse brought his jacks to the Veteran's Park.
- When parents are flushing kids out of cattails and snaring some in nets, this is a reference to Planet of the Apes when Colonel Taylor and two of his fellow astronauts first encounter human life, only to be victims of an ape hunting party shortly afterwards.
- Bart takes a Troll doll to church. He also sings "Troll Man" to the tune of the song "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave.
- Ms. Albright passes round a replica of the slingshot that David used to slay Goliath.
- Scotchtoberfest is a parody of Oktoberfest.
- Bart struts down the street to the tune of "Stayin' Alive" by the Bee Gees. The sequence is a reference to the movie Saturday Night Fever.

- Bart says that Jessica's hair smells like red Froot Loops when Froot Loops of any color are all the same flavor.
- After Bart is accused of stealing from the church collection plate, he is forced to wear a straitjacket and mask in church, which is a reference to Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
- Grampa says that he was the one that cancelled Star Trek. The original TV series had previously been saved by "Save Star Trek" nationwide letter-writing campaign, but was cancelled by NBC very abruptly in June of 1969.
- Reverend Lovejoy covers his ears and sings "Bringing In the Sheaves" by Knowles Shaw and George Minor.
- Jessica calls Bart 'yellow trash', a play on the phrase white trash.

- Bart's calendar shows April has 31 days and May has 30. It's actually the other way around.
