Medusa was a Gorgon, a monster in Greek mythology.
History
Medusa was dating King Polydectes, but she dumped him. Polydectes never got over her, so Medusa started turning people into stone with her second-hand smoke to get his attention again.
King Polydectes asked Perseus to bring back Medusa's head as a punishment for crashing his "mini-chariot" into him. When Perseus arrived at Medusa's cave, he found her talking with her sister, Circe. Perseus waited for Circe to leave, then attacked Medusa, but Medusa revealed that she didn't turn people into stone by looking at them, but from her second-hand smoke.
