"Heartbreak Hotel" is the second episode of broadcast season 30 of The Simpsons and the six hundred forty-first episode overall. It originally aired on October 7, 2018. The episode was written by Renee Ridgeley and Matt Selman and directed by Steven Dean Moore. It guest stars Rhys Darby as Tag Tuckerbag and George Segal as Nick.
Synopsis[edit]
- Marge and Homer's marriage is tested when they travel to a tropical island to compete for a million dollars on Marge's favorite reality competition show. After getting eliminated in the first round, Marge finds out that it was all Homer's fault.
Plot[edit]
The Simpson family is watching TV, watching the finals of The Amazing Place, hosted by Tag Tuckerbag, and Bart and Lisa insist that Marge and Homer participate in the next season. When Marge has had enough, after telling her kids to "can it," she shows them their tryout for the show from the past.
Lisa edits a video of them, and at Springfield Squidport, the tryouts are held. Bart and Lisa bring their parents' tryout video—without them knowing—while Marge continues opening rejection letters. At home, Marge opens the mail and finds out with Homer that they were selected.
Unfortunately, during the first trial, #SuitcaseStowaway, they lose and get #Shelliminated. Matt Selman claims that the inspiration of the episode was feeling bad for the first person to be kicked off Top Chef every year.[4] The Who's Afraid of the Virginia Woolf? parody came from co-writer Renee Ridgeley.[5] The producers tracked down George Segal to voice Nick a week before the episode aired because he had said that Virginia Woolf was his favorite movie he was ever in.[6]
