One day, while accompanying her mother to the airport, she ran onto the plane hoping to watch him fly. Inside the cabin, however, she discovered that her father was actually working as a flight attendant, serving passengers snacks, including Fig Newtons and Hydrox. Embarrassed at being recognized by his daughter, he repeatedly told her not to look at him. The incident became a lasting childhood memory and was later connected to Marge's fear of flying.[1]
As a child, Mona Simpson sang to Homer a bedtime song based on the Fig Newton jingle. The lyrics described Fig Newtons as having a rich, chewy filling and a golden, flaky outer layer, ending with the phrase "Doing the big Fig Newton."[2]
