Cultural references[edit]

• The stories on Action News introduced by Kent Brockman include:
  • Former president Ronald Reagan dying his hair.
  • American cartoonist Garry Trudeau having a new musical comedy revue.
• At the Butthead Memorial Auditorium, Skinner starts his speech with "The times they are a-becoming quite different", hinting Bob Dylan's lyrics from his song, "The Times They Are a-Changin'".
• Dolph owns an Apple Newton, a personal digital assistant produced during the 1990s.

The Mighty Pigs are a parody of the Mighty Ducks, the title team in Disney's The Mighty Ducks. Its logo, featuring an aggressive pig goaltender mask, is based on that of the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

• Chief Wiggum's ice hockey team is named Mighty Pigs. Besides bearing the derogatory term for "cops", the name of the team is a parody of The Mighty Ducks, the title team of a Disney film series, later turned into an actual team in the NHL.
• Apu's ice hockey team, the Kwik-E-Mart Gougers, is a reference to price gouging, the practice of increasing the prices of goods to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair by some, something that Apu usually does in the series.
• According to Homer, a sport a girl should play is foxy boxing.
• Lisa pictures herself being sent to Monster Island, the island with creatures from the 1969 Japanese film All Monsters Attack. Monsters such as Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra are seen chasing an adult Lisa.
• Apu has a statue of Ganesha in his apartment.
• Bart wanted to watch the TV series Cops with Homer.
• Marge saying "I'm no Harvey Globetrotter" is a reference to the Harlem Globetrotters.
  • She also says "Watch out for the Shaq Attack!", a reference to Shaquille O'Neal.
• When Lisa is continuously giving indications to her teammates, Homer calls her "Eye of the Tiger", a reference to the song of the same name and theme song for the 1982 film Rocky III.
• When Bart argues with Lisa in her bedroom, one of his replies is "I know you are, but what am I?". This is a reference to the 1985 American adventure comedy film Pee-wee's Big Adventure, more specifically to its iconic scene where Francis (Mark Holton) tries to convince Pee-wee (Paul Reubens) to sell his prized bicycle.
• Moe, who owes $64,000 in gambling debts, says "They're going to take my thumbs!", which is a reference to the "They took my thumb!" scene in the 1984 American dramatic crime film The Pope of Greenwich Village.
• An allusion to fighting in ice hockey is seen when Lisa provokes Bart by wearing Mr. Honeybunny's head.
• Krusty partially sings "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the Springfield Skating Rink.
• An ad in the ice hockey rink features Menthol Moose, a parody of Joe Camel, the mascot of the cigarette brand Camel.
• The fanfare "Charge" is heard in the beginning of the credits.

Goofs[edit]

• When a close-up shows Homer signing Bart's Academic Warning, it is completely gibberish.
• When Lisa is trying out for basketball, the floor is wooden and the walls are shown to be yellow and peach with a brown stripe at the bottom. When Lisa tries out for volleyball, the walls are a deeper color and there is an additional brown stripe, the floor is also not wood and has duct tape on it. Since it is the same building, it may be in different rooms or it is a goof.
• When the teams crowd into a corner to hit the puck, they are next to the goal. Since the puck was shown going in one direction, it should have been moving away from the net, but it goes into it.
• After the game, Homer gives Bart his turtle. After they hug, the turtle disappears.
• When Bart hits Lisa with trash, the trash is shown. When Apu sees Bart hitting trash at Lisa, it is missing, so the trash appears to come from nowhere and Bart is shown hitting the ground.
• When both Marge, Homer, and Maggie are shown rooting, the order from left to right is Marge, Homer, and Maggie. When Lisa and Bart make up, Marge is shown where Homer was.
• Homer signs a large stack of Bart's Academic Warnings, but it isn't possible that Bart has that many classes.

Trivia[edit]

• Both halves of the stadium looks like the other half, but with a different color scheme.
• For some reason, Marge is shown with the rest of the stadium to be rooting, though she said that she appreciated both of them.
• During the closing credits, the theme music is an up-tempo version played on organ, such as might be heard at a hockey arena. (Also heard in "Bart the Lover".)
• The clips featured in the Action news opening are from "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" (the McBain movie) and "Homer Badman" (Homer S.: Portrait of an Ass Grabber).
• Later in the same season, in the episode "Homer vs. Patty and Selma", Lisa is shown to have joined Springfield Elementary School's hockey team as the goaltender.
• Snake's prison ID is 7F20, the production code for "The War of the Simpsons", the first episode Snake appears in.
