- The title is a reference to the surfing film Blue Crush.
- When the pigeons start attacking Grampa, Milhouse exclaims "Holy Hitchcock!", a reference to the Alfred Hitchcock film The Birds.
- Homer says that he and Marge had their second kiss during Police Academy 4: Citizens on Patrol. He says that the film was so bad that Ice-T wrote the song "Cop Killer" after seeing it.
- The film Clerks plays at the Aztec Theater. Apu claims to have been a creative consultant on the film. Chasing Apu is a parody of Chasing Amy. Both Clerks and Chasing Amy are by Kevin Smith.
- Principal Skinner dresses in his mother's clothes while he and Edna Krabappel watch Psycho.
- Frankie claims to be a Juilliard-trained actor.
- Professor Frink says that butterflies are imprisoned in the Hong Kong Butterfly Detention Facility to prevent Irwin Allen-style horror.
- When Captain McCallister and Gil Gunderson get stranded on a desert island, the Captain says that it reminds him of a The New Yorker cartoon.
