Homer on the Range: The Kwik-E and the Dead! is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #11.

Synopsis[edit]

Grampa tells a story of Springfield in 1897, where industrialist Montgomery Burns owned half the town and an unsuspecting Homer becomes the town's new sheriff and the target of Burns.

Plot[edit]

At the Simpson house, the Simpsons are watching television. Grampa tells the reader that back in his day, violence was right outside your window. He then starts to tell a story.

In 1897, Homer rides into town on a horse and goes to Moe's Saloon. There, the bar wench, Margerie, tries flirting with him, but Homer is uninterested. Moe tells Sheriff Wiggum that Montgomery Burns plans on shooting him for letting Apu set up a shop in town. Hearing this, Wiggum challenges Homer to a card game, offering a beer and Margerie as a reward if he wins. Homer accepts, wanting the beer, and the game begins. Sheriff Wiggum tells Homer that he's out of money, so he puts his badge on the line instead. Homer wins the hand and becomes the town's new sheriff, not knowing about the threat Burns made.

Bart runs into the saloon and tells everyone that Burns has arrived in town. Outside the saloon, Apu gives Homer a gun for the duel. Margerie also gives him a pie, which he stashes in his jacket pocket for later. The duel begins and Burns starts the countdown. However, he skips "two" and shoots Homer, seemingly killing him. As Burns celebrates his victory, the townspeople become angry and chase him out of town. Homer then sits up, the bullet having hit the pie in his jacket, and starts eating the pie.

Grampa finishes his story and says that he doesn't know what he's talking about anymore. He then starts talking about how Springfield got the Olympics in 1923 or 1932, but then thinks that it might have been tiddlywinks instead of the Olympics.
