Cultural references

• As Bart and Lisa arrive at the crime scene, the music from Mission: Impossible can be heard.
• The District Attorney's character design was inspired by famed American defense attorney Clarence Darrow.
• The Judge's character design was based on failed Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork.
• A poster of Krusty that says, "Give a hoot, read a book!" is a reference to the advertising slogan of Woodsy Owl, "Give a hoot, don't pollute!"
• When Bart says, "Comedy, thy name is Krusty!", he references the Hamlet line "Frailty, thy name is woman!"
• The line of Sideshow Bob, "And I would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for these meddling kids," is from Scooby-Doo.
• The entire idea behind The Itchy & Scratchy Show cartoons is an "extremely violent" version of the old Tom & Jerry cartoons. Their names, however, were inspired by the 1958 cartoon Pixie & Dixie.
• The cover of Timely Magazine showing a picture captioned "Krusty - Krook of the Year" is an allusion to Time magazine's annual Person of the Year issue.
• The footage of Krusty suffering from a heart attack and collapsing on stage while the children in the audience laugh, thinking it is staged, is similar to the fate of British comedian and magician Tommy Cooper. On April 15, 1984, Cooper suffered a heart attack and collapsed on stage in front of millions of television viewers midway through his act on the London Weekend Television variety show Live from Her Majesty's, transmitted live from Her Majesty's Theatre. The audience laughed, believing it was part of the act. Cooper later died from his heart attack, unlike Krusty, who survived.

• Sign on the Kwik-E-Mart microwave: "People with pacemakers should stay away from this thing."
• Number of slide carousels Patty and Selma bring from their trip to the Yucatán: Eight.
• Krusty's prison number in this episode is A113. A113 is a little-known Easter egg that Brad Bird includes in his films and cartoons, such as this one, all the Pixar movies, and two other Simpsons episodes ("Cape Feare" and "Sideshow Bob's Last Gleaming"), among others.
• This is the first episode to have Krusty's name in the title.
• This is also the first episode to focus on a recurring character instead of one of the members of the Simpson family.
• When Bart has images in his head while realizing Sideshow Bob was the criminal, some colored feet spin on the screen. All of them have five toes.

Continuity

• Bob's large feet also reveal his identity in "The Bob Next Door".
• Judge Snyder was named Judge Moulton in this episode and again in "Bart Gets Hit by a Car".

Goofs

• When Patty and Selma show their slideshow to the family, it is impossible for a photo to have been taken of Selma giving the camera film to the developer.
• When Apu says, "You can emerge now from chips," his right arm is missing.
• Sideshow Bob refers to The Death of a Titan as Chapter 35 of The Man in the Iron Mask, when in reality, it is Chapter 50.
• When Chief Wiggum is first seen in this episode, his skin is brown. In his next appearance, he is white, and in his last appearance, his skin is brown again.
• When Homer leaves Bart's room with the wheelbarrow of Krusty merchandise, he has a Krusty balloon; however, when he's walking down the corridor, he doesn't.
• In this episode, Apu treats Homer normally, as if he'd never seen him before. But in Season 5's "Homer's Barbershop Quartet", Apu and Homer were in The Be Sharps, so Apu should know him. This may reflect Apu's professionalism.
• The Kwik-E-Mart door opens before "Krusty" steps on the sensor.
• The first row for the public in the courthouse keeps changing.
• Homer tells the police officer that the robber had a big nose and red hair as if he were describing Sideshow Bob, not Krusty.
