- After Smithers and Carl get knocked out in Smithers' rescue attempt of Mr. Burns, Burns says that if the Titanic had him on board, they wouldn't have to hear all those boring survivor stories.
- Burns tells Homer that he's as buoyant as the "unsinkable Molly Brown", a reference to Titanic survivor Margaret Brown.
- Lenny eats a can of spinach before he jumps in to save Carl, a reference to Popeye.
- A billboard for the Springfield Orchestra performing "An Evening of Bach" is seen.
- Burns tells Homer, "I'll tell you what I told Melville...I'm not interested in your silly whale stories," a reference to Moby-Dick by Herman Melville.
