- Grampa tells a story where John F. Kennedy gave him a book, but Kennedy and Fidel Castro were in cahoots and Kennedy was handing out copies of Communism for Beginners by Karl Marx.
- When looking for Grampa, Homer dresses as Elmer Fudd from Looney Tunes and says "be vewy, vewy quiet".
- The songs "Papa Don't Preach" by Madonna, "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin and "The Living Years" by Mike and the Mechanics played in Homer's car.
