Synopsis[edit]

"Bart is rescued from a confrontation with Springfield Elementary's bullies by Diggs, a recent transfer student and aspiring champion in the niche sport of falconry. But Bart soon discovers that Diggs harbors aspirations on a far more grand scale than wrangling falcons: he actually wants to take to the sky himself."

Plot[edit]

At the First Church of Springfield, Reverend Lovejoy introduces a guest speaker, Reverend Kartawijaya. Reverend Kartawijaya talks about a boy in his village called Sumadi, who never goes to church, ties the monkeys' tails together, and tells people that the tiger is gone when the tiger is still there. Bart feels moved by the story and wants to donate $20 to Sumadi and the village. Homer lends Bart the money and tells Bart to pay it back when he can. Homer then starts to pester Bart into paying back the money. Bart becomes increasingly stressed over needing to pay back his father and decides to eat things at school in return for money. After eating several things, the bullies offer Bart $20 to eat a a dead frog. Bart accepts and gets the $20 before he has to go to the hospital. At the hospital, Dr. Hibbert tells the family that the frog is filled with formaldehyde. Bart finally pays Homer back, although he forgets about the money Bart owes.

At school the next day, Bart becomes a social outcast, with nobody wanting to be seen near him. The bullies begin to mock Bart over him eating the frog until a falcon, Freedom, swoops in and stops them. The falcon is revealed to be owned by Diggs, a kid who transferred into Springfield Elementary a few months back. Diggs reveals to Bart that he starts up the Falconry club at Springfield Elementary again, after a long hiatus. Bart asks to join, since he likes Freedom, and Diggs and Freedom accept him into the club.

Bart becomes more and more interested in falconry and stays out late to hang with Diggs and Freedom, which worries his family. Bart and Diggs have Freedom fetch objects for them, and Diggs helps Bart bond with Freedom. One day, while Bart, Diggs, and Freedom hang out in a tree, Diggs tells Bart to watch him do something really cool before he jumps out of the tree, hurting himself. Bart goes to visit Diggs in the hospital, where Diggs tells Bart that he thinks all humans can fly, but they just forget that they can. Bart gets confused when Diggs tells him that he still believes that humans can fly. At that point, Dr. Hibbert brings another doctor in to see Diggs.

Bart tells his family that Diggs got transferred to another hospital and shows the family a printout about the hospital, which is the Twisted Meadows Psychiatric Hospital. Marge tells Bart that he can't visit Diggs because it's not a place for young children to visit. Bart then insists that Diggs isn't crazy and that he wants to hang out with Diggs still. Later, Lisa goes to Bart to talk to him about Diggs. After Lisa says that they can't just fix him, she offers Bart a hug. They both hug the bedpost so that they don't have to hug directly.

The next day, Bart finds Diggs at the falconry club, having managed to get a day pass to enter the falconry competition. Bart is wary of Diggs at first but goes with him to the competition anyway. Just before Diggs takes his turn, he tells Bart that he wants his help to open all the falcon cages, freeing them. When Freedom sets off, a rope pulls on the cages, opening them all up. Diggs gets ready to go back to the hospital since his day pass is almost up, and Diggs tells Bart that he likely won't get another day pass for a while, handing the falconry club over to Bart before leaving. Milhouse then comes to Bart and apologizes for pushing him away.

At dinner that night, Marge serves a cooked bird. Bart asks if it's Freedom, but Marge says that it's duck. The family then tucks into their food, and Lisa asks for the peas to be passed to her.

Reception[edit]

In its original airing, "Diggs" received a 1.2 rating and was watched by 2.69 million people.[1]

Dennis Perkins of The A.V. Club gave the episode a C+ rating. He points out that Bart acts out of character in the episode, with "sudden selflessness" over Reverend Kartawijaya's story and felt that the story of Bart befreinding someone with mental health issues was "undermined by Bart's very presence".[2]

As of May 2021, the episode has a 6.2 rating on IMDb.[3]
