Breaking Bart is a Simpsons Comics story first printed in Simpsons Comics #191.
Plot[edit]
Lisa wins the Springfield Elementary's Mathletics Competition, but it turns out that the school can no longer afford to send her to the out-of-state semifinals. Lisa then asks Homer if he can pay the trip, but he cannot afford it, which makes Lisa sad. Bart and Milhouse walk to the Kwik-E-Mart to buy a Squishee. Bart thinks his Squishee has too little syrup so he decides to make one with only syrup when Apu's back is turned. Milhouse warns him and leaves the store. Bart starts using the Squishee machine, but it cannot handle the pressure this time, and explodes.
The next day, Martin tells Lisa about the Math Club, where club members challenge each other to solve mathematical problems. Lisa joins the club and wins every duel that she gets. After she wins six duels, Lisa finds out that the winner receives money, because the club has come up with a system of how to win the lottery. This means that maybe now Lisa can afford a ticket to the Mathletics Competition. To pay the repair of the Squishee machine, Bart begins to work at the Kwik-E-Mart again. It turns out that Bart is better this time at performing his duties. The following nights, Bart continues to work at the Kwik-E-Mart and Lisa earns money through the math club, but soon she become addicted to solving math problems and begins to stay awake all day. Lisa realizes after a few days without sleep that she must go to bed, when her competitive spirit appears and persuades her to stay awake and continue solving math problems to bring in more money, which she accepts. Meanwhile, Bart is still doing a good job at the Kwik-E-Mart.
After Lisa scolds Database, he challenges Lisa and her competitive spirit to a math battle where the winner takes charge completely. At the same time, Apu dismisses Bart because he has worked 100 hours without sleep and become a model employee, and Apu is worried that Bart will take his job. Since the pay was paid two days ago, Apu gives Bart a bonus. Lisa is doing her math battle when Bart passes by. Bart tells Lisa and her competitive spirit that it is unfair that they are twins now, which makes Lisa's competitive spirit completely forget about the math duel, because she is now confused about how Bart can see her. After Lisa's competitive spirit doesdn't answer Lisa's question under five seconds, Lisa wins the math duel and her competitive spirit completely disappears. Lisa thanks Bart and tells him that she will end up in the math club, even though she could almost afford to buy the tickets. Bart feels sorry for Lisa, and gives her his bonus pay. The Simpson family is now watching Lisa take part in the Mathletics Competition out-of-state semifinals. Marge tells Bart that it was nice of him to give the money to Lisa. Bart tells Marge that he is just happy that the stage was double-booked so they can have both the Mathletics semifinals and a monster truck rally at the same time in the arena.
