- The main plot is a reference to the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and the film adaptation Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.
- The cover art for the comic this story was originally published in is a parody of the film's theatrical release poster.
- The Itchy & Scratchy cartoon "Choco-Pussy or Dip and Let Die!" is a reference to the James Bond films Octopussy and Live and Let Die.
- The flying monkeys released by Sideshow Bob are a reference to the book and film The Wizard of Oz.
- When Grampa is attacked by a group of cyborg monkeys, he says, "You don't scare me. I've seen When Animals Attack thirty-seven times." He then comments "If Chuck Heston can whip your butts so can I.", referencing Charlton Heston, who portrayed the protagonist in Planet of the Apes.
- The log flume ride in the factory is a reference to the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at the Disneyland parks.
