Harvest of Fear is a horror comic book series published by Whoop-De-Doo. The comics are presented by The Old Lamplighter.
Contents
History
Bart bought a copy of Harvest of Fear #3 from Snake at a yard sale. That night, he decided to read it. After he read the story "Quilty as Sin!", Bart couldn't sleep and kept imagining his family making references to the story. Bart decided that he had to know the worst of the comic, so he read the next story, "A Fine Broth of a Boy". However, he found that the last page had been cut out of the comic. Bart went to The Android's Dungeon to ask Comic Book Guy for another copy, but he revealed that the comic's writer, Mort Hopper, had cut out the final page of every copy of the comic in existence. Comic Book Guy told Bart that Mort Hopper lived just outside of Springfield, so Bart went to visit him to find out what the ending of the comic was.
Mort Hopper told Bart that the end of the comic just had the kid see a normal monster and that there was nothing special about it. Bart asked why this would lead him to cut out the last page of every copy, and he responded by saying that he knew it would drive people like Bart crazy and they would come to him looking for answers. He then seemed to transform into a monster and seemingly attacked Bart, although the last page ended up getting cut out.
Plot
Quilty as Sin!
Joey and Timmy try to stop their friend Johnny from smashing open a turtle. Johnny says that he thought there might be something inside the turtle, like a harmonica or a calendar. Johnny gets mad at his friends for complaining about his actions, so he goes home. When Johnny gets home, he finds the lights are all off. His mother tells him to sit down and drink his lemonade. Johnny's mother then asks if he's comfortable in his skin and then asks if he thinks his skin could be more comfortable. She then asks if Johnny has ever noticed how pleasant to the touch potholders are and how nice their quilted surfaces feel. Johnny gets confused by the questions, and Johnny's sister calls him a dumb old boy. Johnny asks why they are acting so funny, and Johnny's mother says that the family has all had their skin quilted, just like potholders, and they want him to be quilted too. Johnny starts to panic and wants to leave, but realizes that his lemonade was drugged. Johnny's sister turns the lights on and his family approaches him to quilt his skin.
A Fine Broth of a Boy
A couple of boys go to Mr. Jippers' comic store, only to find that all his comics had been bought out that morning. They then go to Mr. Whilliker's shop to find that they were all bought out only ten minutes earlier. The boys ask Officer Carey if he knew the person who bought them all, and he identifies the person as Mr. Stokes, a newcomer to the town who bought the old Grandville Place. One of the kids decides not to go there as it's too scary, leaving the other one to go alone. The kid knocks on the door and Mr. Stokes answers it before inviting him in. Mr. Stokes leads the kid into a room where he says the comics are. However, what is in the room causes him to scream. It is unknown what happens to him afterward as the final page is missing.
Behind the Laughter
Harvest of Fear is a parody of EC Comics horror comics, such as Tales from the Crypt and The Haunt of Fear. The Old Lamplighter is a parody of the Crypt-Keeper from Tales from the Crypt.
