Cultural references
- The episode name is a reference to the fungal skin infection athlete's foot.
- Skinner burns a cart of books in a book burning machine called the "Anti-Gutenberg 3000", the machine has a temperature display that says 451 degrees. This is a reference to the novel Fahrenheit 451, which is about a dystopian future where all books are burned, along with the houses they are kept in. The name Gutenburg is a reference to Johannes Gutenburg, the man who invented the printing press.
