Cultural references

• The episode title is a pun on the musical Bye Bye Birdie.
• The breakfast cereal Stabby-Oh's, which Itchy and Scratchy advertise at the very beginning of the episode, is a parody of Lucky Charms.
• During the scene where Marge chases the school bus, Milhouse says, "It's like Speed 2! Only with a bus instead of a boat!", off-handedly summarizing the plot of the original film, Speed.
• When Bart and Milhouse are making unkind comments about Francine Rhenquist on her first day at Springfield Elementary School, Milhouse says, "Yeah, she thinks she's Babe:Pig in the City", referring to the second movie about Babe the pig.
